Creating a culture of professional liability issues awareness

After the contract has been signed and Notice to Proceed (NTP) received, most Consultants give little thought to professional liability issues until there is a claim.  Then they think about those issues a lot and wish that they had done so during the design process.  To overcome this situation, Consultants can create a culture of professional liability issues awareness by providing regular and frequent reminders about these issues.  This may be easily accomplished by including a brief professional liability issue topic in weekly planning meetings.  Use of the various topics provided in “A Guide to Managing Engineering and Architectural Design Services Contracts” at the meetings would be an efficient way to accomplish the weekly reminders.  Additionally, use of these topics at the weekly meetings becomes a continuous training course for new employees.  At the end of a year, all of the topics in the book will have been called to the attention of those involved in the design.
